Protesters throw firecrackers and bottles in response
The situation at the demonstration against coronavirus measures near the Brandenburg Gate in central Berlin has become heated, reports TASS.
After calls to disperse, police used water cannons against the demonstrators, and firecrackers, smoke bombs and bottles flew in response. There is a sharp smell of firecrackers in the air. Several times the demonstrators tried to break the cordon and once used a piano located in the square as a ram.
Several thousand people remain in the square and the police continue to call for everyone to disperse. The crowd responds each time with disapproving chanting and whistling.
Detentions have begun, and the police are picking up particularly aggressive demonstrators from the crowd.
More than 2,000 people maintain order in the city. According to preliminary estimates by the police, there were around 10,000 demonstrators at the rally.
