US Senate adopts anti-doping “Rodchenkov Act”

The law provides for the prosecution of anyone in the world who colludes to violate anti-doping rules.

As reported by TASS with reference to the American anti-doping agency USADA, the US Senate has adopted a bill that will make it possible to prosecute persons involved in schemes that systematically violate anti-doping rules.

“USADA would like to thank all those who collaborated on the creation and adoption of the 2019 Rodchenkov Anti-Doping Act, which took place in the US Senate today without opposition. <…> The law establishes penalties for… doping fraudulent schemes that rob athletes, citizens and businesses”, – the USADA statement said.

The Rodchenkov Act provides for the possibility of prosecution by the United States of any person for involvement in a doping conspiracy at competitions with the participation of the United States. The law applies to competitions held under the rules of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Violators face imprisonment up to 10 years and a fine of up to $1 million. The Act does not impose penalties for doping by individual athletes. In addition, the law will protect whistleblowers.

However, the law will not apply to North American professional leagues (NBA, NHL, etc.) that do not follow the WADA code.
