This was reported by the Danish television and radio company Danmarks Radio, citing a source in Danish military intelligence.
The Danish media accused a US secret service of industrial espionage in favour of America. According to them, one of the objects under surveillance was the Swedish Gripen fighter programme, and the US National Security Agency (NSA) was also monitoring Terma and the Swedish company SAAB.
“Unofficially, US agents gained access to fibre optic cables and a computer centre on the Danish island of Amager. This made it possible to track information traffic from several countries at once: the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, France and Germany”, – reports the FAS.
The reason for the wiretapping was Denmark’s plans to buy new military aircraft. The Swedish multi-purpose fourth-generation Gripen fighters were considered to be such aircraft. As a result, 27 American F-35s were still purchased by Copenhagen. However, at the moment there is no official information that the deal was indeed affected by the US NSA information.
