Expert: Sandu will pursue a more anti-Russian policy

There will also be changes in economic relations with Russia, which concern “the supply of hydrocarbons, possibly the regime for Moldovan goods or the regime for Moldovan guest workers in Russia”.

As ria.ru reports, Bogdan Bezpalko, a member of the Council on International Relations under the President of Russia, has stated that ex-Prime Minister Maya Sandu, the leader in the second round of the presidential elections in Moldova, will pursue a more anti-Russian policy, both in economic issues and the settlement problem in Transnistria.

“The outlook is difficult, but as a pro-Western politician Sandu depends on certain political forces that are in the West. In general, I think that all of Moldova’s policies as a very small and very dependent state will be rebuilt on anti-Russian rails. Maybe there will not be such a sharp, catastrophic scenario as in Ukraine, but I think that it will be very consistent in this direction. I am convinced that this will concern both humanitarian policy and language policy, as well as Transnistria and peace settlement projects, which until the last moment were based on the memorandum of the special representative of the Russian President Dmitry Kozak and the 5+2 mechanism, and the issue of Russian peacekeepers’ stay in Transnistria. In the issue of Transnistria, Sandu is likely to increase pressure on Russia to incorporate the latter into Moldova”, – said Bezpalko.

According to his forecast, economic relations with Russia will also change, which concern “the supply of hydrocarbons, possibly the regime for Moldovan goods or the regime for Moldovan guest workers on the territory of Russia”.

“Not much good can be expected from Sandu, but on the other hand it will be at least an honest policy towards Russia, because although we considered some Moldovan politicians pro-Russian at certain periods of our relations, these politicians did not achieve any real results or breakthroughs in the Russian-Moldovan relations for various reasons. Their pro-Russian position was to receive benefits and preferences from Russia in economic aspects”, –  the expert said.
