Serbia has already joined the EU declaration on elections in Belarus, but Brussels believes that this is not enough
Serbia has about a week left to announce its decision on sanctions against Belarus. However, the EU would not make such demands if it treated the Serbs really well, said Ilya Kaitez, a retired colonel and expert in international politics and security.
“The EU wants to put us in the front row against Belarus and Russia, if possible. Thus, they create a very big problem for us, because both Belarus and Russia are very kind to us”, – explains Kaitez.
According to him, the Serbian government needs to weigh the arguments for and against before making a decision. The problem is that the EU is constantly pushing Serbs into a deadlock with its hypocritical policies.
“They always have new and new conditions”, – the expert complains.
EU requirements are not in Belgrade’s interest, but it will not be able to impose punitive measures against Serbia if it refuses, says diplomat Zoran Milivojevic. The expert is convinced that Belgrade needs to pursue a harmonious foreign policy. If the country goes for Europe, such a decision will leave an indelible mark on relations with Belarus, which are at a decent level.
