According to the President of Moldova, being the Minister of Education, Sandu voted for all cabinet decisions that allowed for thefts
The President of Moldova Igor Dodon believes that his rival in the presidential elections, who is the leader of the pro-European Action and Solidarity Party, Maya Sandu, is responsible for the loud theft of €1 billion from the country’s banks. In a video message posted on Friday in social networks, he demonstrated documents showing that Sandu, while a member of the government, supported the decisions that made it possible to “steal the century”.
“People should know: Sanda voted for all this. I understand if she was a philologist or a historian, but she seems like an economist, bragging that she worked for the World Bank”, – Dodon said. As education minister, he said, Sandu voted for all cabinet decisions that enabled the embezzlement.
The corruption scandal associated with the withdrawal of €1 billion from the Moldovan banking system broke out in 2015 and provoked protests, the fall of two governments and the ruling coalition of pro-European parties, which enjoyed the support of the USA and the EU. The report of the Kroll detective agency, which conducted an investigation at the request of the government of the Republic, says that the money was withdrawn through the “Banca de Economii”, “Banca Sociale” and “Unibank”, controlled by businessman Ilan Shor, who was convicted in 2017 in this case.
The investigation concluded that one of the organizers of the theft was the Moldovan oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuc, who fled the country with Shor after the change of power in 2019. The Chisinau court issued an arrest warrant for him, and the prosecutors asked the U.S. to extradite the oligarch to his home country.
