EU extended sanctions against Venezuela by one year

The EU has extended by one year the sanctions against the Venezuelan authorities, including the arms embargo. This was stated in a statement by the EU Council.

“The Council today extended the EU sanctions regime against Venezuela for one year, until 14 November 2021. This decision was taken in the light of the ongoing political, economic, social and humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, where continuous action is undermining democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights”, –  it says.

The Council recalls that the sanctions “include an embargo on arms and equipment for internal repression, as well as a travel ban and an assets freeze on 36 blacklisted individuals holding official positions and responsible for violations of human rights and/or undermining democracy and the rule of law”.

“These measures are designed to promote democratic cooperative solutions in order to ensure political stability in the country and meet the immediate needs of the population. The targeted measures are flexible and reversible and are not intended to harm the Venezuelan population”, –  the statement said.
