The Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Tedros Adan Gebrejesus, congratulated Joseph Biden and Kamala Harris, candidates for President and Vice-President of the United States of America from the Democratic Party, on winning the election. On his Twitter feed on Sunday he announced WHO’s readiness to work with them, highlighting the importance of solidarity in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

General elections were held in the USA on 3 November. Votes are still being counted, but leading American media predict that Biden will prevail. He himself has already announced his victory. Donald Trump, the current Republican President and rival of Biden, did not admit defeat, stating that the vote count cannot be considered complete. The American leader also confirmed his intention to go to the courts, as he believes that there were numerous violations committed by the Democrats during the elections.

On 29 May Donald Trump announced his intention to completely end US relations with the WHO, once again accusing the organisation of being under full Chinese control. According to Trump, Chinese authorities and WHO management did not take appropriate action in response to the spread of the new coronavirus. In addition, in Washington, D.C., they felt that the organization’s leadership had given up on the changes that the American administration had insisted on. The United States informed the UN of its withdrawal from WHO effective 6 July 2021.
