Expert: reaching an agreement with Russia on START 3 will be one of Biden’s priorities

Daryl Kimball, head of the U.S. Arms Control Association, believes that it would once again be appropriate for Moscow to propose to Washington that START 3 be extended for as long as possible – five years.

Achieving agreement with Russia on the extension of the Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (START) will be one of Joseph Biden’s priorities as soon as he takes office as US President. This was expressed by the head of the U.S. Arms Control Association Daryl Kimball in an interview with a TASS correspondent on Saturday, commenting on Biden’s victory in the U.S. elections on November 3.

“One of the key priorities for President-elect Biden in his first days in office will be to reach an agreement with Russia to extend the New START Treaty until 5 February 2021”, –  the expert said. The START Treaty is unofficially called START 3 in Russia. In the USA this agreement is known as New START.

At the same time Kimball expressed the opinion that it would be again expedient for Moscow to propose to Washington to extend START-3 for the maximum possible period of five years.
