Earlier The Washington Post reported that the Democrat plans to rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement as soon as he takes office.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson believes that the United States, under the administration of Joseph Biden, who won the presidential election according to leading American media, will pay increased attention to climate change issues. The Head of the British Government said this to journalists after participating in the UK Memorial Day ceremony.
“I think that under President Biden in the White House we should expect the return of American global leadership in the fight against climate change. As you know, the UK was the first major country to set a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050. And we hope that now President Biden will follow our example and help us to achieve good results at next year’s 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-26) in Glasgow”, – Johnson said.
General elections were held in the USA on 3 November. Votes are still being counted, but leading American media predict that the Democratic Party candidate, Biden, will prevail. He himself has already announced his victory. Acting President Donald Trump, who is rival to Biden, did not admit defeat, saying that the vote count cannot be considered complete. The American leader also confirmed his intention to go to the courts, as he believes that there were numerous violations committed by the Democrats during the elections.
On Saturday, The Washington Post reported that Biden is planning to sign a series of decrees as soon as he assumes office on 20 January, including rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement, from which Washington has withdrawn under the Trump administration.
The Paris Agreement was adopted on 12 December 2015 as a result of the 21st Conference of the Framework Convention on Climate Change. The participating countries agreed to prevent the average temperature on the planet from rising by more than two degrees Celsius by 2100 compared to pre-industrial times. The agreement, among other things, envisages a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
