The President of Iran also expressed the hope that “those who impose sanctions will recognise the wrong path that will not lead to the achievement of their goals”.
Iranian President Hassan Rowhani expressed the hope that the new US administration will return to fulfilling its international obligations. The politician made a statement in this regard on Saturday.
“We hope that <…> the experience of the last three years will serve as a lesson for them, and the new US government will accept the implementation of laws and agreements and return to its obligations”, – his press office quoted the President as saying.
Rowhani also expressed the hope that “those who impose sanctions are aware of the wrong path that will not lead to the achievement of their goals”. “The Iranian nation will continue to tolerate and resist until the other side returns to the [enforcement] of laws and agreements,” he said.
The outcome of the current US presidential election has not been finalized. According to general estimates, Donald Trump’s rival Democrat Joseph Biden is on the verge of receiving the 270 votes needed to win. He has also set a record for the number of votes cast (over 72 million). However, there are no official voting results yet, and Trump refuses to accept defeat and intends to wage a further battle to determine the results in US courts.
The future of the nuclear deal (Joint Comprehensive Action Plan, JCAP) has been called into question since the US unilateral withdrawal on 8 May 2018 and Washington’s imposition of sanctions on Tehran for its oil exports. According to Tehran, the other parties, especially Europeans, do not fully adhere to their obligations in the economic part of the agreement, so the deal as it stands makes no sense. As a result, Iran has begun to suspend its obligations under the agreement with regard to uranium enrichment and research activities in stages, and in early January it announced the completion of this process.
