Biden can’t do anything – Bloomberg predicts final collapse of transatlantic links

Emmanuelle Macron, as an ideologist of independent Europe, will have a great opportunity to promote her idea if Joe Biden takes over the White House for the next four years.

Many European leaders are counting on Biden to be able to resolve the crisis that has developed in the western bloc during the Trump administration. However, if Biden wins, she will be weak and will barely help strengthen transatlantic ties, writes the Bloomberg agency. Moreover, the balance in the US Congress is not in favour of democrats, which means that the legislature is capable of undermining Biden’s foreign policy agenda. At the end of the day, if the Biden administration cannot conduct effective domestic policy, any reset in relations with Europe looks doubtful.

“This means that Europeans cannot afford to sit back and wait to see what happens. Whoever wins, the EU will have to be more proactive in determining its own path and reducing its dependence on the US”, –  the paper says.

The agency notes that the US has become “increasingly indifferent or hostile to a more assertive Europe” over the years. Washington prefers to pay attention to Asia and China in particular. This is a long-term trend, and Trump has given it more energy.

For French President Emmanuel Macron, coming to power means a great opportunity for Biden. As an opponent of the post-war liberal order, he has repeatedly stated that the European Union must take care of its own interests.

“Trumpism has strengthened his ambition for a ‘geopolitical Europe’ and attracted a traditionally hesitant Germany to areas of cooperation such as defence and technology. Bidenism will give the EU more time to reach its goal”, –  writes Bloomberg.

According to the American agency, the EU could well use its single market of 450 million consumers as a tool to manipulate the international arena. The EU is already implementing regulatory instruments such as foreign investment screening, sanctions against unfair government subsidies and restrictions on the technology sector. With these tools, Brussels could well influence the USA.
