Minister Heiko Maas called for the negotiations to be brought to a decision on extending the contract.
Germany considers the Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (START 3) to be a security guarantor and calls on Russia and the USA to bring the extension negotiations to success. This was announced by German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on Friday.
“Germany welcomes recent talks between the US and Russia on the extension of the START Treaty. This positive momentum should continue after the US elections. This treaty is not just a bilateral issue, it is a guarantee of global security. I encourage Washington and Moscow to finally take the steps necessary to extend the treaty”, – the Minister said.
He said the renewal could also pave the way for a broader arms control architecture and further reductions in nuclear warheads, including non-strategic ones. “China should also be involved in this discussion [of the broader mechanism],” added Maas.
