Maas called for “not to put oil on the fire” in the situation around vote counting in the USA

In the opinion of the German Foreign Minister, “decent losers are more important for democracy than brilliant winners”.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas warned of the danger of an aggravation of the domestic political situation in the USA after the presidential elections. He said this in an interview with the Funke Media Group published on Friday.

“America is more than a one-man show. Anyone who in this situation continues to pour oil into the fire is acting irresponsibly”, –  said Maas. In his opinion, “decent losers are more important for democracy than brilliant winners.”

The German minister believes it is necessary to “overcome political differences” in the USA and wait for the results of the vote. Maas warned that democrats must never undermine faith in fair and free elections.

The German Foreign Minister also expressed the hope that the transatlantic partnership would soon be strengthened.

“In any case, we must quickly get the West to act as one team again”, –  he said. Maas reiterated that he intends to make proposals for further building the EU-US relations.

According to the minister, the world needs the USA “as a stabilising power and not as a factor of chaos”. He stressed the importance of working with Washington on pandemic issues at the World Health Organisation (WHO) and welcomed the announcement by US presidential candidate Joseph Biden that the US would resume its participation in the Paris Climate Agreement if it won the election.
