Two Georgian parties have already resigned their seats in the new parliament, demanding re-election because they received too few votes.
The parties Lelo for Georgia and European Georgia – Freedom Movement have armed themselves with a tool that pro-Western forces in various countries have used too often in recent months. As the opposition to Belarus and Kyrgyzstan, Georgian political formations have claimed that the elections were rigged.
“Today Lelo’s political council consulted and decided that the party is not going to enter this parliament because we are not going to legitimize an illegitimately elected parliament”, – said one of the party leaders, Badri Dzhaparidze.
The Georgian opposition started to build a tent city under the parliament building yesterday. The first clashes with law enforcers were also recorded there. Thus, the opposition is trying to challenge the results of the voting, which took place last Saturday, October 31.
It is noteworthy that Western observers considered the elections to be legitimate. At the same time, both OSCE representatives and US Embassy officials accused the Georgian authorities of “pressure on voters” and “blurring the boundaries between the ruling party and the state”.
“Although this is not enough to invalidate the election results, the electoral process in Georgia is being harmed, which is unacceptable”, – said American diplomats, thus leaving room for maneuver for pro-Western forces of the country.
