Media: Hong Kong police have detained seven opposition politicians

Detentions related to the investigation into the riots and scuffles that occurred in the parliamentary hall on 8 May.

On Sunday, Hong Kong police detained at least seven former and current opposition politicians from the Legislative Council. One of the detained was Democratic Party Chairman Hu Jiwei, RTHK radio station reported.

The detentions are related to the investigation into the riots and scuffles that took place in the parliamentary hall on 8 May this year.

The Hong Kong Legislative Council is a unicameral parliament with 70 members. Half of its members are elected by direct vote in the territorial constituencies and the other half are nominated by representatives of industry communities on professional grounds.

In August, the parliamentary elections scheduled for 6 September for this special administrative region of China were cancelled due to the worsening epidemic situation. Beijing has allowed this body to extend its powers for a year.
