According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany, the parties need to reach an understanding on the “global rules of the game”.
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas expects the EU and the USA to be able to create a new framework for transatlantic relations after the presidential elections in the United States. He said this in an interview with the Tagesspiegel am Sonntag newspaper published on Sunday.
“After the elections, we will quickly turn to Washington with proposals and propose a transatlantic new deal”, – Maas said. According to him, the EU and the USA need to reach an understanding on ‘global rules of the game’. – “The future of the world will be terrible if we are not able to tackle the serious issues of our time together” ,- the German minister warned.
The Foreign Minister expressed dissatisfaction with the way the current US President Donald Trump treated the European Union.
“We heard Trump pointing out in one fell swoop that China, Russia and the EU are the United States’ most serious opponents. This has to stop”, – said Maas.
The minister did not comment on the possible results of the presidential election. “It would be dangerous if I, as Foreign Minister, began to formulate personal wishes about the outcome of elections in other countries,” he said, adding that Germany would have to accept any outcome of the vote.
The upcoming general elections in the USA on 3 November will elect a president and vice president, 35 senators, all 435 members of the House of Representatives, 13 state and territory governors and local authorities. Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Joseph Biden are competing for the presidency.
