The agreement comes into force on 26 October
UN Secretary General António Guterres commended Baku and Yerevan for reaching an agreement on the entry into force of the ceasefire on 26 October.
“The Secretary-General welcomes the joint statement by the Governments of the United States, Armenia and Azerbaijan stating that the humanitarian ceasefire agreed in Moscow on 10 October and confirmed in Paris on 17 October will enter into force at 08:00 local time on Monday 26 October”, – said Stefan Dujarrik, the official representative of the General Secretary of the World Organisation, in a statement released on Sunday.
The joint document was distributed by the US Department of State earlier on Sunday.
The situation in Nagorno-Karabakh escalated on 27 September, with active fighting taking place in the disputed territory. Both sides report deaths and injuries, including among the civilian population.
Baku and Yerevan have been contesting Nagorno-Karabakh since February 1988, when the region announced its withdrawal from the Azerbaijan SSR. During the 1992-1994 armed conflict, Azerbaijan lost control over Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding districts.
