According to the decision of the Verkhovaya Rada, voting will not take place in the part of Donbass which is not controlled by Kiev.
Voting in the local elections started in Ukraine on Sunday at 8:00 local time. Polling stations were opened throughout the country, except for the part of Donbass that is not under Kiev’s control and a few districts adjacent to the line of contact.
According to the Central Election Commission of Ukraine, 224 thousand candidates have joined the fight for seats in united territorial communities, rural, district, city and regional councils, of which 2.6 thousand people will fight for the seats of mayors in 324 cities. Today Ukrainians will have to elect 22 regional councils, 381 city councils, 136 district councils, more than 1,000 village councils, as well as mayors of most Ukrainian cities, village heads and towns.
According to the decision of the Verkhovaya Rada, voting will not take place in the part of Donbass which is not under Kiev’s control. In addition, there will be no elections in 10 rural, settlement and urban territorial communities in Bakhmutsky, Volnovakhsky, Mariupol and Pokrovsky districts of Donetsk region and eight in Severodonetsk and Schastensky districts of Lugansk region controlled by Kiev. In these areas adjacent to the line of contact, the elections were cancelled for security reasons.
Voting will end at 20:00.
