Prime Minister Ersin Tatar was elected President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is not recognised by the international community
As RIA Novosti reports with reference to the news agency of Northern Cyprus TAK, Ersin, whose candidacy was actively supported by Turkey and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, following the results of counting 100% of the ballots in the second round of elections gained 51.74% of votes, the current leader of Turkish Cypriots Mustafa Akinji – 48.26% of votes.
“Supporters of the National Unity Party began celebrating his victory even before the vote count was completed. Party members are waving flags and chanting slogans in front of the Tatar residence,” the agency reported.
The Cypriot press calls Ersin “Erdogan’s appointee” and the Turkish president openly supported Ersin before the elections. Ersin supports the existence of two states in Cyprus and opposes the establishment of a bicommunal and bizonal federation on the island.
