Previously, the Moldovan parliament passed a law that restricted Russian-language broadcasting on Moldovan television.
The laws restricting Russian-language broadcasting in Moldova need to be changed and some Russian channels need to be returned to the country. This was announced on Monday by the President of Moldova Igor Dodon in an open online interview with TASS First Deputy Director General Mihail Guzman.
“We want to adopt a new law on the functioning of languages so that the role of the Russian language is more clearly defined there. I insist [that] we should return some Russian channels to Moldovan TV viewers”, – he said.
Dodon recalled that at the end of 2017 – beginning of 2018, the Moldovan parliament passed a law that restricted the Russian-language broadcasting on Moldovan television, and the broadcasting of some channels was banned.
“I hope very much that after the presidential election, we will manage to change these laws as well. I hope that we will find support in the Parliament and move in this direction”, – said the President of Moldova.
In December 2017, the Moldavian Parliament adopted a bill limiting the broadcasting of information, analytical, political and military programs from states that have not ratified the European Convention on Transfrontier Television (Russia has not ratified it). The initiative was taken by the then controlling legislative body, the Democratic Party of Moldova. It was strongly criticized by the parliamentary opposition, as well as by President Dodon.
