Russian Defense Ministry will help Abkhazia in the fight against coronavirus

The Russian Ministry of Defense, at the request of Abkhazia, will deploy a hospital in Sukhum for patients with COVID-19.


According to TASS, the Russian Ministry of Defense will soon deploy a mobile hospital in Abkhazia to treat patients with coronavirus, the military department said on Saturday.

“The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, at the request of the Republic of Abkhazia, will deploy a mobile multidisciplinary hospital with 100 beds in order to increase the bed capacity and provide medical care to patients with a confirmed diagnosis of a new coronavirus infection in the Republic of Abkhazia”, – the ministry said in a statement.

It is specified that the servicemen of a mobile multidisciplinary hospital of one of the formations of the Southern Military District “began to march under their own power on standard equipment” from Budennovsk to Sukhum. The mobile medical unit consists of 112 servicemen and 30 units of special military equipment. The hospital will be deployed as soon as possible after the arrival of Russian military specialists in the capital of Abkhazia, the Defense Ministry said.

On October 13, the Minister of Defense of Abkhazia Vladimir Anua appealed to the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Sergei Shoigu with a request to deploy a field hospital in the republic in connection with a sharp increase in the number of people infected with coronavirus infection. As of October 16, the total number of people infected with coronavirus in the republic reached 2,672, 93 new cases of infection were detected per day.
