Russian Railways ready to take Belarusian cargo out of the Baltic States

Belarusian cargo traffic can be easily redirected to the Russian railway network, although the Baltic countries are trying to claim otherwise.

As News Front reported earlier, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia were the first countries to introduce national anti-Belarusian sanctions. By supporting the coup d’état, they provoked a response from official Minsk. Thus, the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, proposed to redirect the cargo flow from the Baltic republics to Russia.

“Almost 40% of the trucks that carry cargo to Belarus this year come from Lithuania and Latvia. This is a huge volume. If we take up this flow, the Lithuanian logistics points will not receive a quarter”, –  he said.

The Baltic States could indeed suffer serious damage in the near future. As of today, the necessary conditions already exist for the reorientation of the Belarusian cargo flow to the Russian railway network, said Sergey Khrapach, Head of the Board of the Association “Mezhregionavtotrans” in his comments to the agency “Sputnik”.

He drew attention to the fact that at the time of the Soviet Union, the railway was built taking into account the possible increase in load. Thus, its design capacity is higher than the current cargo volumes.

“At the same time, the terminals cooperate with many road freight forwarders, which means that there will be no problems with the organisation of product deliveries”, –  the expert explains.

According to him, it is extremely difficult to compete with Russia in the railway industry.
