Tensions between China and the US are reaching a new level as the White House lobbies for large supplies of advanced weapons to Taiwan.
As Reuters reports, referring to its own sources, the presidential administration has already sent a notice of transactions to Congress for approval.
The Chinese embassy in the United States has called for a halt to arms sales to Taiwan “so that it does not seriously harm Sino-American relations and peace and stability between the two sides of the Strait.
“China has consistently and firmly opposed the sale of American arms to Taiwan and has a strong determination to defend its sovereignty and security”, – diplomats stressed.
The step that is likely to trigger a new round of tension between the US and China involves three deals. They have already been approved by the US Department of State, which oversees arms deliveries abroad.
According to sources, Taiwan will receive HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems developed by the Lockheed Martin Corporation, long-range air-to-ground missiles manufactured by Boeing, and new equipment for F-16 fighters.
In addition, the White House intends to arm Taiwan with drones, Harpoon anti-ship missiles and underwater mines, but notifications have not yet reached Congress.
“It is US policy not to confirm or comment on proposed defence sales or transfers until they have been officially notified to Congress”, – commented the State Department.
