European diplomats are currently working on a punitive mechanism that will be used to force the United Kingdom to fulfill its obligations.
Brussels was pushed to such measures by the government of Boris Johnson. As News Front reported, in early September London decided to refuse to fulfill the key terms of the deal with the European Union, which related to the Irish border. Johnson’s insinuations have caused discontent in both the EU and the US.
The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the destructive step of the British government “undermines confidence”. Charles Michel, President of the European Council, in turn, noted that this “does not give the confidence that we need to build our future relations”.
High-ranking American Democrats even threatened to strip Britain of a trade agreement with the United States if it violates the terms of the deal with the EU. Naturally, for the implementation of the ultimatum of the Democratic Party, a victory in the November elections is necessary.
To avoid similar attacks in the future, Brussels decided to tighten the provisions of the Brexit agreement in terms of the mechanism for fulfilling obligations. According to diplomatic sources of The Financial Times, the idea will be officially announced at the EU summit on October 15-16.
European leaders intend to pressure EU negotiator Michel Barnier to provide the commonwealth with an opportunity to impose “unilateral interim measures” against Britain. The idea, as noted by the interlocutor of journalists, becomes “especially relevant” after the failure with the draft law on the British internal market, which just went against the provisions of the deal.
