Voting in parliamentary elections ends in Lithuania

In Lithuania, voting took place in the first round of elections to the Seimas (unicameral parliament).

Polling stations, which began work at 07:00, closed at 20:00, members of election commissions began counting votes.

“The voting is over. We warn you that the first results are likely to take longer than usual. We expect them after midnight”, – said Laura Matjoshaityté, chair of the Main Election Commission, at a press conference.

As the chairman explained, this is due to the high activity of citizens at the early stage of voting, which amounted to 11.64%.

“The ballots of those who voted are thus received in envelopes, which requires more time to process them”, – Mathjoshaite said.

The first round of elections to the Seimas took place on Sunday. The second round is scheduled for October 25th. It will be needed in those polling stations where none of the candidates will be able to gain more than 50% of the votes. In the second round, the two leaders of the previous stage will compete for the mandate.
