In only one European country and only one-tenth of its population consider the US presidential election to be “flawless”.
This is evidenced by the results of a major sociological survey conducted by YouGov among about 7,000 residents of Great Britain, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Sweden.
As it turned out, only one in ten Europeans believes in the integrity of the American electoral process. Only in Italy does this number reach one-tenth of all respondents. In other countries, between 2 in Germany and 7% in Spain, the US presidential election is considered “completely free and fair”.
A minority of Europeans believe that elections in the USA are free and fair.
This position is understandable to Europeans. The expert community has repeatedly called the current US presidential election the most controversial in the country’s history. Both candidates are mired in scandals and regularly blame each other while the coronavirus, the unprecedented economic crisis and mass disturbances are raging in America. In addition, the Democratic Party has initiated a remote voting procedure under the pretext of spreading COVID-19. This gives Democrats the opportunity to falsify election results in favour of their candidate. Against this background, even the OSCE is questioning the legitimacy of the elections.
It is noteworthy that, contrary to popular belief, Biden is not so popular among Europeans. From 17% of respondents in the UK to 23% in Germany and Sweden, Biden’s possible presidency is positively assessed. Some believe that Biden will make a “bad” or “terrible” president. The majority of respondents – from 27% in France to 55% in Denmark – think that he will be mediocre.
The negative attitude of respondents to Trump is related to his influence on their own countries and the world in general. Only 10-14% believe that he has had a positive impact on their country, while 52-69% believe that he has had a negative impact.
In seven countries between 6% and 15% of respondents believe Trump has benefited the world, while 84-68% believe the opposite. Between 27% and 44% even say Trump had a negative impact on them personally.
