US Department of State Press Officer Morgan Ortegus strongly condemned the attack on civilians in the province of Aleppo, where a car bomb killed more than 20 people.
The United States is concerned about the increase in terrorist attacks in Syria in recent months and calls on all parties to renounce violence. This was stated in a written statement issued on Wednesday by Morgan Ortegus, head of the US State Department press office.
She strongly condemned the attack on civilians in the Syrian city of El-Bab (Aleppo province), where more than 20 people were killed by a car bomb. “We are deeply concerned about the increase in such terrorist attacks in recent months and once again remind all parties that the violence is hampering the hope of a lasting political solution to the conflict in Syria, as called for in UN Security Council Resolution 2254,” the diplomat said. The United States, said Ortegus, “strongly supports” UN Secretary-General António Guterres and his Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen’s call for an immediate ceasefire throughout the country and Pedersen’s efforts for a political solution to the Syrian conflict in accordance with the UN Security Council resolution.
Earlier, the Syrian television channel Al-Ikhbariya reported that a car bomb had been detonated in the centre of El-Baba in the Aleppo province. Al-Jazeera TV reported that more than 70 people were injured. The channel noted that El-Bab and its surroundings are under the control of armed groups of the Syrian opposition supported by Turkey.
