Heiko Maas believes that “Russia itself should be interested in investigating this crime”.
The West is still waiting for Russia to explain the case of Alexei Navalny, otherwise there will be consequences. This was announced by German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas in the Bundestag on Wednesday.
“We are convinced that this cannot go without consequences. In the coming days, we will agree on a common response with EU and OPCW partners. It is clear that unless the circumstances are clarified and the necessary information follows, targeted and proportionate sanctions against those responsible on the Russian side are inevitable”, – he said.
Berlin will also be discussing the situation in the EU, Steffen Seibert of the German government said at the briefing.
“In our opinion, Russia itself should be interested in investigating this crime”, – added Maas. According to him, he discussed this with his Russian colleague.
He also claimed that Moscow was making “absurd accusations” about Germany and OPCW in this context.
