A criminal case has been initiated in Azerbaijan in connection with the shelling of an export oil pipeline

According to the country’s Prosecutor General’s Office, Armenian armed forces fired a Smerch multiple rocket launcher on 6 October on a section of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline, which is located at least 50 km from the theatre of hostilities.

The General Prosecutor’s Office of Azerbaijan initiated criminal proceedings in connection with a missile attack on the Armenian side of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline. The press service of the Ministry reported on Wednesday.

“On the fact of shelling of the oil pipeline a criminal case was opened on 11 articles of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan, the Investigative Department of the General Prosecutor’s Office was entrusted with investigation”, –  it was reported.

According to the General Prosecutor’s Office, on 6 October Armenian armed forces fired from Smerch multiple rocket launcher system at the section of Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline passing through the territory of Aran settlement of Yevlakh district of Azerbaijan, which is located at least 50 km from the theatre of combat operations. The report says that the missile was neutralized in the air by Azerbaijani armed forces. The charges contained in it were scattered 100 meters from the BTC.

Oil produced on the contract field Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli on the Caspian Sea shelf is pumped through the main export pipeline Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan with a capacity of 50 million tons per year. The trunk pipeline, which is over 1,700 km long, is also used to transport Turkmen, Kazakh and Russian oil. The oil pipeline was put into operation in 2006.
