Azerbaijani President calls guarantees of withdrawal of Armenian forces from Karabakh a condition of ceasefire

In order to restore the ceasefire regime, Azerbaijan must receive guarantees of the withdrawal of Armenian forces from the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, confirmed by international mediators. This position was voiced by the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.

“Just restoring the ceasefire cannot be a topic for negotiations. We have requirements. We must be given very serious guarantees, and the international mediators must confirm them. At the same time, we should be provided with a timetable for the withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces from the occupied territories”, – Aliyev said.

According to him, “then the war will stop”.

“We want this issue to be resolved peacefully”, – the Azerbaijani leader added.

He noted that some of the mediators want a simple ceasefire.

“The ceasefire has been in force since 1994, but why hasn’t the issue been resolved over the years? We should be given specific, real dates – when, from which region they will leave”, – Aliyev stressed.
