Media: parliamentary elections in Catalonia to be held on 14 February

No candidates for the post of the head of the regional Cabinet of Ministers yet.

Parliamentary elections in Spanish Catalonia will take place on 14 February 2021. This was announced on Friday by RAC1 radio station with reference to the Speaker of the Regional Chamber, Roger Torrena.

On 28 September, the Supreme Court (SC) of Spain ruled to deprive Kim Torroux, who led the government of the Autonomous Community, of the right to hold public office for 18 months. As a result he lost his status as Catalan leader. Péragonese is now temporarily acting as head of the region’s Cabinet. According to the law, following the decision of the Supreme Council, the Autonomous Parliament must either approve a new Prime Minister or elections must take place in Catalonia.

There are no candidates for the post of head of the region’s Cabinet yet. Earlier, Torra said that elections would be held in the coming months. Torrán, for his part, said that the expression of will could be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. “If there is no debate in parliament [on the candidacy of the new leader of the autonomy], we will have elections,” the speaker said. – The countdown will end on 10 February, so then we will go [to the elections] on Sunday, 14 February.

The Supreme Court considered the appeal of the autonomy leader against the decision of the Supreme Court of Catalonia, which ruled last December in a case of disobedience of the Spanish CEC in the run-up to the country’s elections. The head of the autonomy’s government was then deprived of the right to hold public office for 18 months. On 28 September, the Supreme Council confirmed this verdict.
