Anti-government protests resumed in Iraq

Iraqi protesters in Tahrir Square resumed anti-government protests last night.

The protest was timed to coincide with the anniversary of the protests, which began in October 2019, resulting in hundreds of protesters being killed and thousands injured.
On 1 October 2019, mass protests erupted in Baghdad and several cities in southern Iraq over unemployment, corruption and poor public services. During these protests, security forces used excessive force and tear gas and live ammunition to disperse the protesters.
