According to the publication, the head of EU diplomacy wants to persuade the authorities of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to postpone the parliamentary elections scheduled for 6 December.
Representatives of the liberal group ‘Renew Europe’ and the European People’s Party (EPP) in the European Parliament (EP) criticised the head of EU diplomacy for his decision to send European foreign service delegations to Venezuela to discuss the elections. This was reported in the newspaper El Mundo on Tuesday.
According to her, Borrell wants to convince the authorities of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to postpone the parliamentary elections scheduled for 6 December. According to the head of EU diplomacy, there is little time left before the vote to guarantee the free and democratic expression of will.
According to the publication, Borrel’s decision was criticized by the liberals and the EPP. Thus, the European People’s Party considered such a step as an attempt to “rehabilitate the regime” of President Nicolas Maduro. In addition, “Renew Europe” and the EPP believe that the decision of the EU diplomacy head is not in line with the position that the EU has maintained so far with regard to Caracas.
The groups ask Borrel to clarify whether this move was supported by the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. For his part, the representative of the EU diplomacy assured that “there are no changes in the European policy towards Venezuela”.
The Venezuelan National Electoral Council (CNE) had previously approved the date of elections for the National Assembly of Venezuela. The voting will take place on 6 December, and the election campaign will be held from 21 November to 5 December. For the time being, the majority of National Assembly deputies are opponents of Maduro. Earlier, the Venezuelan government invited the UN and the EU to send observers to the elections on 6 December.
