Ankara said that an attack on Azerbaijan amounts to an attack on Turkey

According to Deputy Chairman of the Turkish ruling Justice and Development Party Numan Kurtulmusz, Ankara expects that the international community “will stop Armenia’s provocative attacks and support Azerbaijan’s just actions”.

An attack on Azerbaijan amounts to aggression against Turkey. This opinion was expressed on Tuesday by Deputy Chairman of the Turkish ruling Justice and Development Party Numan Kurtulmus.

“Any attack by Armenia on an Azerbaijani village is tantamount to an attack on a Turkish village. Turkey expects the international community not to act hypocritically, to stop Armenia’s provocative attacks and to support Azerbaijan’s just actions”, –  the Sabah newspaper quoted him as saying.

The situation in Nagorno-Karabakh escalated on September 27, with active fighting taking place on the disputed territory. Martial law has been introduced in Azerbaijan and Armenia, and mobilization has been announced. Both sides report deaths and injuries, including among the civilian population. Baku has reported that several Karabakh villages and strategic heights have been taken under control. Yerevan reports shelling of territories and outside Nagorno-Karabakh.

Baku and Yerevan have been contesting Nagorno-Karabakh since February 1988, when the region announced its withdrawal from the Azerbaijan SSR. During the 1992-1994 armed conflict, Azerbaijan lost control over Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding districts.
