The life tenure of Supreme Court justices is becoming a problem for Democrats, as five of the nine judges were appointed by Republicans.
According to Reuters, Democrats are already preparing a bill to shorten the term of office in the Supreme Court, as well as limit the president’s ability to appoint judges.
“It would save the country a lot of anguish and help reduce the heat of the battle for judgment, which affects the fault lines of cultural issues and is one of the main factors that erode our social fabric,” said Democrat Ro Hanna, who intends to present the draft already next Tuesday.
As News Front previously reported, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who has served on the Supreme Court since 1993, recently passed away in the United States. Ginsburg was the idol of the liberal public and an ardent opponent of Donald Trump, but now the president has the opportunity to appoint a third judge of the Supreme Court. Thus, for many decades, he pushes the US judicial system towards deep conservatism.
The Democratic bill, a copy of which came to Reuters’ possession, if approved, would limit the term of office of judges to eighteen years. In addition, the president will be allowed to appoint only two Supreme Court justices per term.
