The European Union is not satisfied with the results of the presidential elections in Belarus, because it wants to bring to power a candidate who is acceptable to the West in a repeat election.
Let us remind you that the presidential elections in Belarus were held on August 9. At that time Alexander Lukashenko won, but Western countries, for which the Belarusian leader had been a hindrance for a long time, did not accept the results of the vote. As a result, pre-planned riots broke out in Belarus.
The headquarters of Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the leader of the pro-Western opposition, are preparing for lengthy protests aimed at toppling the government. A former housewife, who also ran for president, refuses to admit defeat. Unprovenly claiming that the vote was rigged, Tikhanovskaya calls herself the “leader” of the Belarusian people, while hiding in Lithuania.
The position of the European Union with regard to what is happening is ambiguous. Poland and Lithuania are actively working on the revolutionary scenario. They are also promoting more radical measures of pressure on official Minsk in the EU. The countries of Western Europe are taking a more cautious approach. French President Emmanuelle Macron has already warned that the Belarusian adventure could create a line of political division on the continent. Moreover, they are afraid to provoke a new round of confrontation with Russia.
Despite this, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrel, said that the European Union intends to continue to rock the situation in Belarus in order to help the opposition carry out a coup d’état and hold elections under Western supervision.
“The European Union stresses once again that the presidential elections in Belarus on 9 August were neither free nor fair”, – the diplomat said. – “The EU’s position remains clear: citizens of Belarus have the right to be represented by those they freely elect in new, inclusive, transparent and credible elections.”
