President Dalia Grybauskaitė dedicated his speech to the UN General Assembly of Belarus and Navalny

According to Gitanas Nauseda, “the UN should monitor the situation in Belarus closely”.

The UN should call on the Government of Belarus to transfer power. This opinion was expressed by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausa, speaking on Tuesday at the general political debate of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly (GA). The general political debate of the General Assembly takes place from 22 to 29 September in the format of pre-recorded video presentations.

“The fundamental foundations of a democratic society and freedom of speech, as well as the right to self-determination, are under attack in Belarus”, –  he said. – “The time has come to defend the values of the international community”.

According to Nauseda, “the UN should closely monitor the situation in Belarus, call on its authorities to refrain from the use of force, ensure respect for human rights, and begin the transition of power”.

The Lithuanian President also followed other European leaders who spoke at the GA to address the situation around Alexei Navalny.

“As the recent case of Alexei Navalny’s poisoning shows, in some countries pressure on opposition forces is rapidly escalating into life-threatening actions”, –  he said, calling for “finding and punishing those responsible” to “preserve international order.”
