The anti-government protests in the Bulgarian capital ended in clashes between demonstrators and police officers.
Three policemen were injured in the clashes, the police said on Tuesday evening, 22 September. The protesters threw firecrackers, stones and bottles at the policemen with protective shields.
AFP estimates that the protest in Sofia on Independence Day gathered around 10,000 people. Actions against the government led by Boyko Borisov took place in other cities as well. Critics of the Bulgarian prime minister accuse him of corruption and links to oligarchs.
Protests in Bulgaria have not subsided for several months now. In August Borisov announced plans to change the constitution of the republic, which increased the dissatisfaction of protesters. They do not find the proposed amendments to strengthen the responsibility of the Chief Prosecutor and demand the resignation of the incumbent Ivan Geshev, suspecting him of his excessive closeness to the oligarchs. President Rumen Radev also sharply criticized the Prime Minister’s intentions.
