An attempt by the American administration to renew UN sanctions against Iran failed due to the position of European states.
Attempts by the United States to impose anti-Iranian UN sanctions have been going on for a month. On August 20, the head of the US State Department, Michael Pompeo, submitted a request to the chairman of the UN Security Council. But the so-called European troika opposed this move.
According to the text of the letter, the countries reject the initiative of the United States to renew sanctions pressure on Iran at the UN level. The document emphasizes that any measures taken to return the restrictions will not have legal effect. This is due to the fact that in 2018 Washington unilaterally withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian nuclear program.
