In the German parliament, a heated discussion unfolded after the Green Party demanded to stop the construction of Nord Stream-2.
Although the political formation considers itself environmental, the incident with Alexei Navalny was chosen as the motive for blocking the project. Unsubstantiated attempts to blame Russia for the alleged poisoning of the opposition leader have been used repeatedly as a pretext for sanctions against Nord Stream 2. However, the Greens were left alone with their resolution against the entire Bundestag.
Parliament did not vote for the resolution. Instead, she was sent to the Committee on Economy and Energy for consideration. Prime Minister of the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Manuela Schwezig, in turn, recalled that Nord Stream 2 is being built “in the interests of Germany.”
“I urge you [the deputies] to reject the resolution, as it does not correspond to the state of affairs and will harm not only the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, but the whole of Germany, as well as the whole of Western Europe,” Schwesig said.
She also advised not to pander to Washington, which turned the small German port of Mukran “into a toy of world politics” by threatening its workers.
“If a friendly country allows itself such threats, it is outrageous, and I expect the support of our citizens from you,” the official said.
