The United Nations has become another battleground in the new Cold War that the United States has declared on China.
The American agency “Reuters” writes about this.
Today, the United Nations is far from the US advantage. Donald Trump’s nationalist policies have led the United States to terminate the climate agreement, withdraw from the Iranian nuclear deal, and cease participation in the UN Human Rights Council and the World Health Organization. But China has stepped up its work in the UN, taking advantage of Washington’s destructive position and challenging it.
“I definitely think there is a battle for the soul of the UN now”, — said a senior European diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity.
According to him, the United States personally gave China the opportunity to assert that it is he who is “a true supporter of multi-vector”.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres also commented on the situation.
“We are moving in a very dangerous direction”, – he lamented, noting the danger of an interruption in interaction between the world’s two largest economies. The consequence of such a scenario will be the formation of two camps, which “will have dramatic consequences, especially for developing countries that will find themselves in the middle”.
“The gap may lead <…> to forms of military confrontation that would be very undesirable”, – Guterres stated.
The destructive position of Washington gave Beijing a lot of opportunities in the international arena. In particular, the Chinese government is actively promoting its representatives to leading positions in the UN and even insists on the inclusion in the resolutions of language related to the ideology of the Communist Party. The United States is trying to resist this alignment in the organization. Back in January, the State Department appointed a special official to counter the “malevolent influence” of China and other countries in the UN. This step, according to experts, was a step of despair. Now Washington has to fight for influence “instead of relying on automatic respect from the UN”, said Jeffrey Feltman, the former head of the UN’s political affairs department.
“The UN can be described as home territory for the United States, but leaving the field will help advance China to fill the void”, – he stressed, reminding Washington that “the game does not stop” when it leaves the field.
