A quarter of Austria’s population has a migration background

Almost a quarter of the “Austrian” population currently has a migratory background – mainly due to the influx of refugees in 2015/16.

In numbers: exactly 2,070,100 people either immigrated to Austria themselves or are direct descendants of immigrants. After the “refugee crisis” in 2015, 200,000 people applied for asylum. 118,000 of them received a positive decision – more than in any other EU country.

The unemployment rate among migrants previously fell to 10.8 percent (2019), but due to the coronavirus crisis, this number rose by as much as 74.9 percent over the previous year. The education system also faces major challenges as a result of immigration, with the proportion of non-German speakers rising to 26.4 percent.
