The ruling bloc of German Chancellor Angela Merkel CDU and the Social Democratic Party of Germany will not support the demand to abandon the completion of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. Bloomberg reports this citing sources in the Bundestag.
On the eve of the conservative, candidate for the leader of the Christian Democratic Union party Friedrich Merz called for a two-year moratorium on the construction of the gas pipeline due to the situation around Alexey Navalny.
According to the agency’s interlocutors, the Merkel coalition will not support calls to freeze the project, since the German industry is supporting the construction. In addition, the deep ties between the two countries, especially among the German Social Democrats, are unlikely to disrupt the implementation of Nord Stream 2.
Another important factor is US hostility to the pipeline and the pressure exerted. This is indirectly evidenced by the statement of the Eastern Committee of the German Economy about Merkel’s request not to link the implementation of the project with the situation around Navalny.
Another important reason why the German authorities do not intend to abandon the pipeline is the need to pay compensation in the event of a project failure.
