Ukraine is on the list of countries for which the United States Agency for International Development, also known as USAID, has cut funding.
The American edition “Foreign Policy” writes about this, referring to its own sources in the political circles of Washington.
Back in early July, the agency approved Peter Morocco as head of the internal bureau for conflict prevention. Now, thanks to the efforts of this political appointee, Donald Trump, pro-American nongovernmental organizations that have been promoting US interests in many countries have lost their funding.
In particular, he closed one of the major anti-Russian programs in Ukraine. Officially, it meant “opposing Russia’s attempts to destabilize” the situation in the country. The publication does not specify the amount of funding for NGOs under this program, however, USAID’s policy seriously undermines the prospects of the structures existing for US grants.
Morocco also froze funding for the Global Fund for Reconciliation, which supports international conflict mediation, and withdrew $5 million from programs in Myanmar and Somalia.
The USAID Conflict Prevention Bureau only came into existence last year and is still in its formation. This gives Morocco certain preferences. In particular, it has already tried to rewrite the mandate of the bureau. Sources of the publication say that the official by his actions not only undermines the work of the department that finances color revolutions around the world, but also risks drawing the wrath of congressmen. Although, apparently, he is not afraid of legislators.
Morocco held a couple of briefings for members of the Senate and House of Representatives last week. The official harshly criticized major USAID programs. He paid special attention to financial flows in the Ukrainian direction, saying that such “correspond to the goals of US national security”.
Sources among officials in Washington complain that Morocco is undermining “morale” at the agency. However, in an ambitious outburst, Trump’s appointee has already taken over the office tightly, firing a number of directors along the way.
