24 people detained during protests on Wednesday in Belarus

For participation in unauthorized actions on September 2, 24 people were detained in Belarus, three of them are students, the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the republic said on Thursday.

“For violation of the legislation on mass events, 24 citizens were detained, of whom three are students. Before the consideration of cases on administrative offenses, 16 people were taken to places of detention”, – the message says.

In the actions, according to the police, about 1 thousand people took part. Unauthorized actions took place in eight cities of the republic.

Massive opposition protests began across Belarus on August 9, after the presidential elections, which, according to the CEC, the incumbent leader Alexander Lukashenko won for the sixth time, gaining 80.1% of the vote. The opposition believes that Svetlana Tikhanovskaya won the election, not Lukashenko.

In the first days, the actions were suppressed by the security forces; against the protesters who did not agree with the results, they used tear gas, water cannons, stun grenades, and rubber bullets. Then the law enforcement agencies stopped dispersing the rallies and using force. According to official data, in the first days more than 6.7 thousand people were detained, hundreds of people were injured during the riots, among them – over 120 law enforcement officers. The authorities reported the deaths of three protesters.
