It is crucial for the U.S. administration to use the Kosovo settlement. This factor may help in the re-election of Donald Trump. However, there is not much in common between the interests of the US president and those of Pristina.
It is expected that already on September 4 a meeting between representatives of Serbia and the self-proclaimed “Republic of Kosovo” will be held in Washington. It is not excluded that Donald Trump will personally mediate the negotiations. The American media is already actively speculating on this topic. The mass media claim that the Kosovo crisis may soon be dashed. Serbian MP Jovan Palalić told the media why that was not the case.
According to the MP, all vociferous press predictions about the prospect of an agreement between Belgrade and Pristina are explained by the U.S. presidential race. This foreign policy breakthrough is very much needed by Trump, as there is a coronavirus, an economic crisis, and chaos from the ongoing unrest.
“Trump can only use his foreign policy successes to attract the electorate. It takes advantage of what the Americans see in the U.S. as a world leader who has to solve problems of global importance”, – the Serbian politician explains.
He recalled how the Dayton Accords, which ended the Bosnian War, helped reelect Bill Clinton in 1996. However, this does not mean that Kosovo’s elites can start celebrating the recognition of the quasi-state’s independence, Palalic continues. Obviously, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic will not agree to go beyond UN Security Council Resolution 1244. Thus, the Kosovo deal turns exclusively into an element of Trump’s election campaign.
“These negotiations can only be expected to sign some economic agreements and form a framework for subsequent dialogue, so that Trump’s campaign headquarters can make a success out of it in foreign policy”, – said the Serbian parliamentarian.
