The EU has initiated a punitive mechanism against Turkey

Due to Turkey’s geological exploration in the Mediterranean Sea, the European Union is preparing a package of sanctions against Ankara.

This statement was made on Friday, August 28, by the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrel, speaking at a press conference following an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers.

“It is clear that there is a growing frustration with Turkey’s behavior in the EU, so the Council is asking working groups to accelerate work to impose sanctions against individuals proposed by Cyprus because of illegal drilling operations”, –  the diplomat said.

He also did not rule out the possibility that anti-Turkish sanctions will be extended in the future. This issue will be discussed in more detail at the EU summit, scheduled for September 24.

To put pressure on Ankara, the EU is considering blacklisting a number of Turkish ships, Borrel said. They will be banned from entering the ports of the commonwealth countries.
