The EU confirms that it does not recognize Lukashenko as the President of Belarus

The European Union supports the pro-Western Belarusian opposition in its aspiration to carry out a coup d’etat. Official Minsk should not resist this.

Such a statement on Friday, August 28, was made by the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, speaking at a press conference following an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers.

“You know that we do not recognize the results of the presidential elections, and we consider the actions of the government inadmissible,” the official said.

He stressed that Brussels expresses its support to the participants in the coup and demands from the Belarusian authorities “to start a comprehensive dialogue to get out of the crisis”.

According to Borrell, in the near future the EU will prepare a sanctions list, which will include the citizens of Belarus.

“Just today I received a letter from 11 EU member states with a request to do this as early as possible, according to the accelerated procedure, but we must follow the process,” the diplomat said.
