For three months now, the Polish government has been blocking attempts by a German diplomat to take the post of plenipotentiary ambassador of Germany in Warsaw. The reason for this was the roots of the official.
After Rolf Nickel said goodbye to Poland, having served as ambassador for 6 years, he was replaced by Arndt Freitag von Loringhofen. He began his career in the Bundeswehr, where he entered back in 1956. Since then, Loringofen has served both as deputy head of German intelligence and as director of NATO intelligence.
Despite such a track record, a German official has been unable to reach the embassy in Warsaw, which he was entrusted with heading, for 3 months. At first, the situation could be explained by quarantine restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic. Now it becomes clear that the reason is different.
In Berlin, Warsaw’s actions are considered politicized and associated with the ardent anti-German rhetoric of Polish President Andrzej Duda. There is, however, another version. The fact is that the grandfather of the diplomat Berndt Freitag von Loringhofen served as an adjutant in Adolf Hitler’s bunker in the last months of the Third Reich.

“We find it strange that the alarm is not being raised in Berlin. Obviously, no one paid the necessary attention to his personal data”, – a senior Polish official told The Financial Times.
